English as a Second Language (ESL)

Statement of Purpose

– The ESL Program exists to increase opportunities for self-sufficiency and upward mobility in the workplace for adults who are blind through training and practice in spoken English. –

Our Commitment

All Employee and Community Services (ECS) programming offers each individual the opportunity to increase their skills in an environment that supports independence, choice, and control over matters impacting each participant. We invite and rely upon consumer involvement and input.

English as a Second Language Services

The ESL Program provides instruction in spoken English, including comprehension and pronunciation for employees who are blind or have low vision and whose first spoken language is not English.

Features of the ESL Program include:

  • Partnership with St. James ESL Program
  • Group classes featuring pronunciation practice and comprehension

Lighthouse employees who are legally blind and whose first language is not English are eligible to participate in classes.

The ESL Program is funded through community support and our partnership with St. James. We rely on financial contributions from local corporations, foundations, service organizations and individuals.

All community support for Lighthouse programs is channeled through the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation, whose sole purpose is to gather community support for fulfillment of the Seattle Lighthouse mission. Participants do not pay tuition fees.
