Computer Training Program (CTP)
The Computer Training Program exists to increase and support the independence, self-sufficiency, and upward mobility of adults who are blind and low vision in the workplace through appropriate training and access to computer technology.
The course of study is highly individualized, and emphasizes computer and assistive technology tools to be used in the workplace. Class structures are primarily 1:1 instructor led, with occasional group classes.
All Employee and Community Services (ECS) programming offers each individual the opportunity to increase their skills in an environment that supports independence, choice, and control over matters impacting each participant. We invite and rely upon consumer involvement and input.
Computer Training Program Courses
The Computer Training Program (CTP) offers assessment and training on current assistive technology and computer programs, including:
- Typing and keyboarding
- Reading machine use (SERA)
- Introduction to computers
- Microsoft Office Suite
- iPhone with VoiceOver/Siri
- MS Windows
- Assistive technology
- Refreshable braille displays
Computer training classes are currently offered to Lighthouse employees who are legally blind. Class availability is limited. Applicants are encouraged to contact the program as early as possible. Students must have prerequisite skills for computer training. Students also must have supervisor approval before beginning classes.
Costs & Funding
The CTP is funded through community support. We rely on financial contributions from local corporations, foundations, service organizations and individuals.
There is no cost to participants of the Computer Training Program who are employees of the Lighthouse.
Some of our community partners, such as Department of Services for the Blind, refer students to us and cover their costs at the current rate of $70.00 per hour.
All community support for Lighthouse programs is channeled through the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind Foundation, whose sole purpose is to gather community support for fulfillment of the Seattle Lighthouse mission. Participants do not pay tuition fees.
