Title: Deaf-Blind Computer & AT Instructor-Technology Training Center
Department: Employee and Community Services/Deaf-Blind,
Reports to: Director, Employee & Community Services
Hours: Full-time, M-F


The purpose of this position is to provide computer and assistive technology training focused on increasing skills of Deaf-Blind participants. The focus is both work related computer and AT training needs as well as community and Independent Living technology training needs. It includes the development of curriculum and provides limited technical support to Deaf-Blind computer & assistive technology users in their homes and in TTC lab.


  • Teach computer and assistive technology skills to both fully blind and low vision Deaf-Blind people in their homes or in TTC lab
  • Provide skills assessments for interested participants to determine their instructional needs.
  • Develop written curriculum and pre-requisites for work related computer & IL classes; provide necessary supports
  • Work with other agencies to improve relationships and provide excellent customer service
  • Effectively communicate with team and participants
  • Maintain files, provide documentation, data collection, reports, and summaries on time
  • Provide referral to community technical support providers to Deaf-Blind computer users Participate in all Deaf-Blind program activities as appropriate
  • Participate in all Lighthouse organization activities as appropriate
  • Attend and assist with Deaf-Blind Retreat(s)
  • Represent the Lighthouse in a positive manner at all times

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to support others to succeed
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively instruct others
  • Ability to ensure a positive learning environment
  • Fluency in American Sign Language with an ability to work with a wide variety of language modes, including PSE and individuals who have limited language skills
  • Strong interest and knowledge of equipment and technology
  • Knowledgeable in MS Office applications
  • Knowledgeable about assistive technology software and hardware
  • Knowledgeable of Braille related software and hardware
  • Knowledge of BrailleNote and similar technologies
  • Ability to read uncontracted Braille
  • Willingness to learn contracted Braille
  • Knowledge of and experience teaching assitive technology for low vision and blind consumers
  • Able to problem solve independently
  • Creativity & flexibility; ability to change approach as needed
  • Willingness to work as a team member
  • Ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically about the programs and services we offer.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to take initiative, function autonomously, and be dependable
  • Professional demeanor
  • Demonstrated excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Mature judgment and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and among diverse groups


  • BA or BS in Rehab, Computer, Education, Social Services or related field required
  • Three years in disability related field, with emphasis on teaching
  • A minimum of three years working and socializing in the Deaf-Blind community
